This back isn't 31" -- more like 28.5, the same as all the other mediocre chairs out there.

The back of the chair is 31.5" without a doubt. I added a photo to verify this. I bought the chair for my wife and she loves it. To me, it feels a little stiff. I prefer a little more supple feel. I am 6'3" and the top of the chair rests in the middle of my head when I lean back. This is far better than most chairs that stop at the shoulders. Overall, I would say this chair is as good as any other I have tried in this price range with similar quality.
